The product
Yes. We offer a dedicated SSD expansion module for the Mac mini M4 Pro (2024), available in 2TB and 4TB. The M4 and M4 Pro use different PCB and power-management designs, so the modules are not interchangeable — order the module matching your machine.
4TB is available for the Mac mini M4 Pro. For the M4 (non-Pro), the maximum is 2TB — higher capacities require different NAND chips and significant power-circuit modifications, which we avoid for reliability reasons. We don’t currently offer 8TB.
Yes. We use the same NAND chips Apple ships, and every module is benchmarked before release. In our testing the 2TB module reads at 3,382 MB/s and writes at 3,452 MB/s — matching or beating Apple's factory drives. See the comparison on our homepage.
Significantly higher data transfer speeds — both reading and writing — which means faster application loading, quicker boot times, and improved system responsiveness. The 2TB model is significantly faster than the 256GB base model in both sequential and random I/O.
If you’re dealing with large media files, pro apps, or gaming libraries, 2TB is a major relief over 256GB. You can always upgrade again in the future if needed.
Installation
Yes — your new SSD ships blank, so your Mac mini must be restored over DFU mode from another machine. Two options:
- Another Mac (2015 or later): connect via USB-C and restore macOS using DFU mode.
- A Windows PC: set up a macOS virtual machine with VMware and run the same restore process.
The full walkthrough is in our DIY guide.
Back up everything you want to keep — personal files, applications, photos, videos, documents. Cloning the entire drive is best. Due to Apple’s security architecture, data on the original SSD cannot be recovered after the swap.
About 30 minutes for most users, including the macOS restore over DFU. The physical swap itself takes around 10 minutes with the included tools. The full walkthrough is in our DIY guide.
Try again following the DFU-mode steps in our DIY guide. If the issue persists, contact our support — real humans, no runaround.
Typically not. Simply return your Mac to its original state (swap the stock card back) if you ever need Apple service.
