Order and development update: After Chinese New Year, Feb 2025
First of all, a huge thank you to all of our customers for your continued support and patience. We recognise that it’s been a bit awkward with the Chinese New Year falling in between, but we truly appreciate your understanding during this festive period.
Updates for Existing Customers
As of today on 4th Feb, the Chinese New Year holiday officially concludes. Most companies, including ours, will resume normal working hours from 5 February. However, please note that our factory workers will be gradually returning to their positions in the coming days. We can only expect full manufacturing capacity to resume by next week.
We understand that many of you have been waiting for your orders, and we’re doing everything in our power to expedite the process. We aim to begin shipping the second batch of orders soon, with a portion of the existing outstanding orders likely being shipped in February. Depending on the order date, some of you may receive your shipments at the beginning of March, but rest assured we will do all we can to get all outstanding orders dispatched as soon as possible.
Updates for Prospective Customers
We’ve seen an extremely high volume of orders recently, and we want to be transparent about shipping times. If you place an order now, it is likely that your order will be shipped in March 2025. However, it is still a first-come, first-serve system. If you’re keen to secure one of our SSD modules, we recommend placing your order sooner rather than later to ensure you’re in the queue.
We also need to inform you of an important update: President Trump’s additional tariff on imports from China (commonly referred to as Trump’s tariff) now directly impacts our ability to ship SSD modules to the US. To mitigate this, beginning from 4 February 2025, we will need to add a small surcharge of $9 to US-bound orders in the form of shipping costs. Unfortunately, this is beyond our control, but please rest assured that previous successful orders will not be affected by this new surcharge.
Development Updates
We’re also excited to share some developments in our product lineup. Currently, our SSD expansion module is designed exclusively for the Mac mini with M4 (non-Pro) chips. However, many of you have expressed interest in storage upgrades for the Mac mini M4 Pro. The good news is that we’ve successfully prototyped the PCB for these units, and we’re now actively working with vendors to secure the NAND chips for large-scale manufacturing. With the Mac mini M4 Pro, we’ll be able to offer expansion units with capacities of 4TB and 8TB, as the power management ICs are better suited for these larger drives. More details will follow soon.
Additionally, by popular demand, we are exploring the possibility of producing SSD modules for the Mac Studio. This will ensure that expandmacmini.com can offer full coverage to all expandable Mac computers in the Apple Silicon era. It’s an exciting time for us, and we can’t wait to bring these new options to you!
