Currently, the maximum storage available for the M4 Mac Mini through Apple’s official channels is 2TB. The 4TB and 8TB configurations are not available for the M4 Mac Mini, as they require different NAND chips, which are only found in the Mac mini M4 Pro variant. The M4 Pro has a completely different PCB and power management IC design.
Installing 4TB or 8TB NAND chips into the M4 Mac Mini would involve using non-Apple NAND chips and making significant modifications to the power management circuits. For now, we believe it’s best to avoid such modifications to ensure product safety and reliability. However, we may explore options for these higher capacities in the future, using thorough testing to meet our quality standards.
Currently, our Expansion Module supports the M4 Mac Mini but is not yet compatible with the M4 Pro Mac Mini due to differences in the hard drive PCBs between the two models.
We’re actively working on a solution and will share updates as soon as they’re available.

The installation process takes about 30 minutes for most users, including the time for a macOS restore. The physical swap process is quite simple and can be completed quickly with the right tools, and following our step-by-step installation instructions. Keep in mind the Mac restore process does depend on your internet speed for downloading the macOS image.
It’s crucial to back up all your important data before beginning the upgrade process. This includes all your personal files, applications, photos, videos, documents, and any other data you’d like to retain. It would be best to clone the entire hard drive if possible, using software such as Carbon Copy Cloner. This ensures that your data is safe, and that you can restore it to the newly upgraded system with ease. You can use Time Machine, a cloud backup service, or a dedicated disk cloning software for this process.
You can expect significantly higher data transfer speeds (both reading and writing), which means faster application loading, quicker boot times, and overall improved system responsiveness. Additionally, our 2TB model will have significantly higher speed than the base model.
Absolutely! We prioritize providing the same, and often even better, speed as Apple’s original storage. We use the same high-quality NAND memory chips, and we conduct rigorous testing to guarantee identical (if not superior) performance levels. You’ll notice no difference in speed for your day-to-day tasks.
You will need access to a second computer to install a new SSD in your Mac Mini M4, but you have two options:
Option 1: Using another Mac:
If you have access to another Mac (any model from 2015 or later), you can:
– Connect your Mac Mini to the second Mac using a USB-C cable
– Use DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode to restore the operating system to your Mac Mini
– Complete the installation process directly
Option 2: Using a Windows PC
If you only have a Windows PC available, you can still complete the installation by:
– Setting up a macOS virtual machine using VMware on your Windows PC
– Using the virtual machine to perform the same restoration process
– For a detailed walkthrough of this method, we recommend watching this tutorial: How to Install macOS on VMware for Mac Mini SSD Installation
The second computer is necessary because your new SSD will be blank with no operating system. Your Mac Mini will need to be put into recovery mode and restored using another device that can run the Mac recovery tools.
